Making a French Beret with a Cap Republished Part 2 of 2

We started with the construction of this cute French Beret with cap yesterday and managed to finish the cap and headband. Today we will make the lid and the lining, before bringing all the pieces together. The pattern is available from APrettyTalent.com and can be downloaded here.

The Lid
Lay the panels for the lid of the beret side by side in the correct order before starting the construction of the beret.

Remove the pattern from half of the pieces.

Fold two pieces over and pin as shown.

Sew at 1,5 cm seam allowance.

Put the first two pieces back in its place in the circle. Fold the third piece over as shown and pin.

Sew at 1,5 cm seam allowance.

Leave these three pieces be for the moment and repeat the same steps for the other three pieces of the lid.

Your lid should now be constructed in two halves. Iron all of the seams open.

Lay the two halves of the beret lid on top of each other and pin.

Sew at 1,5 cm seam allowance.

Iron the middle seam open. This is what your lid should look like.

Attach the ring to the lid
Fit the ring of the beret to fit on the lid. Pin.

Sew at 1,5 cm seam allowance.

Cut the excess fabric away so the beret will lie flat when turned right side out.

This is what the top of the beret should look like now. Iron it flat, unless you want a softer edge.

This is what the bottom of the beret should look like now.

Pin the ring and lid of the lining right sides facing.

Sew at 1,5 cm seam allowance. Do not cut any excess fabric away.

Attach the lid to the headband
Fold the head band in half and mark the centres at the back and front with pins.

Fold the ring in half, finding the centres of the front and back on the ring. Mark with pins.

Line up the centre fronts on the headband and ring and pin in place. Do the same with the centre backs.

Pin the headband to the ring all the way around.

Sew at 1,5 cm seam allowance.

Attach the lining
Insert the lining in the beret. Make sure that the shorter and longer sides of the beret are neatly lined up.

Unfold the headband and pin the ring of the lining to the inside of the headband.

Sew by hand.

Tuck the headband and lining back in and you are done!
