How to draw: A Pig

In this second blog on learning to draw, I will show you how to draw a pig in a couple of easy steps. We will then use tinted charcoal to colour the pig. If you unfamiliar with tinted charcoal, you are in for a treat!

We once again start on a sturdy sheet of blank paper, using a pencil to draw our initial drawing in.

Start by drawing two large overlapping circles in the centre of your page. These will become the body of the pig.

Draw a smaller circle for the head of the pig. Add an oval for the top part of one of the front legs.

Add two ears on top of the head. Add a semi-circle at the back for the rear hind leg.

Connect the body with lines top and bottom. Add the legs of the pig.

Add the snout, the trotters, the tail and the underbelly of the pig.

Add detail to all the different parts of the pig.

I used a black Sharpie marker to redraw the final lines of the pig.

Erase all of the pencil lines and markings.

I used Derwent Tinted Charcoal.

I started with the areas that were the medium shade and coloured those with rough lines.

I then moved on to the highlighted areas.

I then added the darkest shaded areas.

I then coloured the lightest areas where the sun would reflect off the hide of the pig.

Then I used my finger to blend the charcoal.

I added sand for the pig to stand on, and then added a darker shade to draw the shadowed areas in the sand.

I used an even darker shade to draw the shadow that the pig's body cast on the ground.

Any smudges on the page can easily be erased.

Spray the picture with fixative to prevent further smudging.

The completed pig!
