How to draw: A Bottlenose Whale

I have decided to do a series on how to draw. However, aside from giving you some tips on how to draw certain animals, people, places, vehicles, and more, I also want to use the series to introduce you to a range of mediums and art materials. In this first blog in the series, we are going to draw a very simple shape, when we draw the bottlenose whale. I opted to use pens to draw and colour the whale in. Let me show you how in a few steps.

Start with a sturdy blank piece of paper and a pencil.

Draw a large oval in the centre of your page, with a smaller circle below it and a triangle to teh side of it. This will become the body, head and tail of the whale.

Connect the shapes by completing the body of the whale.

Draw in the fins and the bottlenose snout of the whale.

Complete the facial features.

Complete the tail.

Complete the fins.

Now redraw the whale in pen. I used a Faber Castell Pitt Artist's Pen with Medium sized tip.

Erase all of the pencil markings.

I used a Faber Castell Pitt Artist's Pen with a brush tip to colour the whale.

I used a different shade of Faber Castell Pitt Artist's Pen with a brush tip to continue colouring the whale.

I used yet another of these pens to add highlights to the whale.

I then used a Pentell Paint Marker in blue to draw the surrounding water for the whale to swim in.
