Handbags and Wallets Part 14 Upright Bag

We started with the construction of this bag in the previous blog and got as far as the construction of the pockets. To day we will put the final touches on. The pattern can be downloaded from

Adding some Bling
If you are going to add some bling to your bag, this is the best time to do it. I find the center of the bag above my outside open pocket and attach the blin there. I prefer the ones that need to be sewn on since they are less likely to drop off.

Find the center of the bottom and one of the side panels and pin it together. Pin the bottom all the way around, folding the corners neatly to make a 90° angle.

Allowing for a 1,5 cm seam allowance, attach the bottom to the panel.

Stop approximately 1,5 cm from the end of the bottom panel on both sides.

Attach the other outside panel to the bottom in the same way and sew. Simply cut the excess zipper away, if applicable.

Pin the sling to the bottom panel and then tuck it safely away inside the bag to prevent it accidentally slipping into the way when sewing.

Attach the sling with a stay stitch. This will make it easier to work with the bag when more pieces are added.

Pin the inside open pocket to the lining.

Find the centers of the lining panels and bottoms and attach it the same as for the outside bag.

Find the centers of the zipper flaps and the top of the bag. Lin these up and pin together. The right sides should be facing.

Allow for a 1,5 cm seam and sew.  Attach the other side of the zipper in the same way to the bag.

Cut the excess fabric away on the bend so that the seam will lie flat when turned out.

Pin the zipper sections together as well.

Sew the bottom of the bag to the zipper flaps, making sure that the sling is in the middle of the layers.

Turn the bag right side out and put the lining inside, fitting it in properly.

Turn the whole bag inside out again, now that you have properly fitted the lining into place. Pin the linings.

Finish the inside by hand.

This is what the inside of the bag looks like when you are done.

This is the outside of the bag when completed.
