How to draw: A Boxer

In today's drawing lesson, we are going to be drawing a boxer, step by step. When the drawing is in place, I will introduce you to tinted graphite pencils. This is the same stuff that is used to make normal grey pencils. They simply add a tint to it. The result is something widely different from normal colouring pencils. It gets even more interesting when we discover that these pencils are also water-soluble - and that the painted colour is different from the dry one! I will show you more in this blog.

You will need a sheet of paper and a pencil to start today's drawing.

Start with a crooked rectangle that is smaller at the bottom than the top. Add a small circle on top, overlapping it, for the head.

Two wide lines mark the spaces for the legs.

Mark where the arms will go.

Develop the gloved hands and the legs. Mark where the pants will go.

Develop the upper body.

Develop the lower body.

Develop the facial features and head.

Add a setting for the boxer.

Redraw the boxer in pen. I used a blue felt tip pen.

Erase the pencil lines.

These are the pencils I told you about in the opening paragraph. They are once again developed by Derwent.

Colour the gloves and shorts.

Colour the body.

Colour the hair. I added a moustache and beard while I was at it.

I added light grey to the white areas.

Colour the background.

Dip your brush in clean water and pain the coloured areas with the wet brush.

Notice how vastly the colour changes once you apply water to it.

Here you can see similar results in the shorts.

The final picture.
