Making Your Own Butter At Home

I have mentioned before that I have been invited to visit some friends in Botswana who stay on a dairy farm. This means that they have access to lots of milk and cream. My friend, Louise, being a really good cook, who loves experimenting in the kitchen, it did not take her long to start trying out all sorts of recipes and delicatessens with the milk and cream. In today's blog I show you how she makes butter the old-fashioned way. You can also do this at home!

Louise added the cream to an old-fashioned butter churner and started churning away. You can also use an electric beater to churn the cream with.

After a long time of beating and churning the cream, it turns into butter. Adding salt is optional. Spoon the butter into a butter mold, taking care not to trap air in the butter. Smooth the butter out and tamp it down.

Here you can see what the butter looked like after the churning process.

The tamping and smoothing of the butter is rather important if you wish it to maintain its shape. Allow the butter to chill and harden in the fridge before removing the mold.

Wrap the butter in plastic or wax paper and allow to chill in the fridge until use. Simply delicious all natural butter!
