Giving An Old Cupboard A Chalk Paint Makeover

Over the past couple of blogs I have been telling you about getting things ready for my for my friend's cottage in Hondeklipbaai. While I was sewing pillowcases, etc, the handyman on the grounds, Les, was giving an old kitchen cupboard a much-needed make-over with chalk paint. I asked his permission to take photos of the process and he readily agreed. I share his makeover story with you in today's blog.

This is the cupboard before its makeover.

The top had a vinyl covering that would have to be pulled off.

The inside would need a fresh coat of paint.

The back panel was pulling apart and would have to be nailed back in place.

The bottom would need an aluminium strip to strengthen it. This is not readily available in Hondeklipbaai and would only be attached later, though.

Les set out to strip the old paint and give the cupboard its much needed fresh coat of paint.

It started to look like new again in next to no time.

After the paint had dried, Annie Sloan Dark Wax was applied in circular motions with a sponge.

This soft wax has a liquid consistency, making it very easy to apply.

The chalk paint used comes from Harlequin's and is called aged white.

Two tiles were cut to fit on top of the cupboard.

New handles would also have be purchased elsewhere.

The inside with its fresh coat of paint.

Fisherman's Cottage is a charming cottage with a lovely view on the bay in Hondeklipbaai. If you ever find your way over there and are looking for a place to stay, you should consider Fisherman's Cottage as an option. For bookings, give Rina a call at 072 493 0757.

This little capboard found a handy purpose in the kitchen of the Fisherman's Cottage, where it not only serves as storage space, but also doubles as a coffee station.
