Sew a Short-Sleeved Top

After all of the warm colours that I have been working with, I decided that it was high time that I spent some time sewing fabric with cooler colours. Even though we find ourselves in the heart of winter, here in South Africa, I had just enough fabric to manage a short-sleeved shirt. Well, the weather will turn warm again and then I will enjoy the shorter sleeves. I once again show you how to sew this yourself.

I chose one of my older Butterick patterns to cut this shirt from.

Pin the front and the back together at the shoulders.

Sew the shoulders together.

Reinforce the facings with stiffening/vilene. Pin the front and back facings at the shoulders.

Sew the facings at the shoulders.

Staystitch the neckline to prevent it from stretching on the curve.

Pin the facings to the top at the neckline, lining up shoulder seams.

Sew the neckline.

Notch the neckline.

Understitch the neckline to prevent the facings from crawling out when wearing the top.

Staystitch the head of the sleeve to prevent it from stretching on the curve.

Pin the sleeve to the top.

Sew the stitch into the armhole.

Pin the underarm seam of the sleeve, all the way down the side of the top, front to back.

Sew from the sleeve through to the hem of the top.

fold a small sleeve hem and pin it.

Sew the sleeve hem.

Now fold a wider sleeve hem and pin it.

Sew the proper sleeve hem.

Roll the hem of the top and pin it.

Sew the hem of the shirt.

The completed top.
