Sew a Jacket with a Coordinating Collar

I have been making pretty bottoms for my new set of mix and match clothes, but I had yet to make a jacket or top to go with it. In today's blog I show you how to make a jacket with a coordinating collar. I liked this so much that I cut a similar jacket from two of the fabrics that I was using for the set.

I decided on a pattern by Butterick to make the jackets from.

Pin the shouders.

Sew the shoulders of the back and front panels.

Reinforce the collar with stiffening/vilene. Pin the coller along the three outer edges.

Sew the collar along the three outer edges.

Notch the collar.

Turn the collar right side out and iron flat.

Reinforce the facings with stiffening/vilene. Pin the back neck facing to the front facings at the shoulders.

Sew the facings.

Find the centre of the collar.

Find the centre back on the back panel of the jacket.

Find the centre of the back neck facing.

Line up all three centres and pin together with the collar sandwiched in between the other pieces. Pin all the way down so that the front facings are pinned to the front panels of the jacket.

Sew all along the pinned edges.

Notch the back neck edge and facings where it curves. Turn right side out and press flat.

Pin the sleeves to the armhole.

Tack the top of the sleeve.

Sew the sleeve into the armhole.

Pin the underarm of the sleeve and the side seam of the jacket, lining up the sleeve seams.

Sew all the way through from the sleeve to the hem of the jacket.

Roll the hem of the jacket and pin it down.

Sew the hem either by hand or machine.

Roll the hems on the sleeves.

Sew the hems on the sleeves.
