Art Journal: All Children Matter

I discovered this cute work of art on Pinterest a while ago and saved it to my PC, not knowing if I would ever use it. Today, I was contemplating the important role that we as adults play in children's lives, especially me, as a teacher. It reminded me of this picture and I went in search of it. I decided to use this in the my art journal for the day. I show you how I went about it in this blog.

I start my journal on black paper and use a plain white colouring pencil to draw with. As an experiment, I used the cheapest pencil in my collection, which is one I bought at a cheap store one day, out of sheer desperation. I loathe the set, which is called 'Precious Memories' as it is very difficult to get any colour out of it, despite the appearance that it would deliver lovely brilliant colours. Still, I found the white worked very effectively for the purpose of drawing on black paper.

I quickly copied the drawing from my computer screen.

Then I went in search of my Inktense sets. In the end, I used only the pencils in this project.

I started by colouring the central pole around which the whole story developed.

Then I coloured the basket and backboard.

I coloured the skin and hair on the little figure.

This was followed by the ball and dress.

The pants and sneakers followed next.

Now it came time to fill in the background. I did this in shades of blue with sparkles of white.

Lastly, followed the foreground wire mesh.

I was now ready to add the journalling.

I used a white paint marker to write the journalling on the opposite page: "With the right support, and a little guidance, any child can reach great heights in life. Age, race, gender, background - none of these matter, if a child can be made to believe that they matter. - Miekie."

I then went back to the white pencil from earlier on and drew a very simple hot air balloon soaring above the clouds. I also filled the space in the top left corner with the suggestion of birds in flight.
