Today I am going to show you how to fold a milk carton. I would strongly advise against storing liquids in it, but I do think it could be fun packaging for a quirky gift. I use one of the patterns from the Geometric Foursome collection to fold this box. The design is available from APrettyTalent.com as a Digital Download. I show you how to color the design, but you can skip over this part and do your own thing. Once the design is colored, we'll fold the box.
Coloring the Design
I use Derwent's student range coloring pencils for these designs, simply to save my more expensive artist quality pencils a bit. The Academy range of products are still very good and you will certainly not be disappointed by it, but it is not quite on par with sets such as Coloursoft or Studio as it requires more effort to get a rich color on the page.
I start at the center of the circles with Cadmium Yellow.
This is alternated with Naples Yellow.
The circle surrounding this is colored in Carmine Red
The next circle is colored Poppy Red.
The circle surrounding this is colored Red.
Every second strip is colored Light Green.
The remaining strips are colored Dark Green.
Every second pair of 'fringes' are colored Jade Green.
The alternate fringes are colored Sea Green.
I use three colors in the blocks and three different patterns, alternating the patterns in the rows. The first color I put down is Purple.
This is followed by Violet.
Lastly I use Dark Blue.
Folding the Box
The page is now fully colored and we can move on to folding the milk carton.
I start by cropping the white borders.
I then determine the width and height of the milk carton and draw the plan accordingly. I jotted down the measurements I used so you could use it as a guideline.
I now needed to develop the more intricate detail of the box and draw in those lines. Once again I indicate the measurements on my drawing.
Very little of this page is cut away when the pattern is cut out.
I fold all of the fold lines over a ruler to ensure neat and tidy fold lines. Almost all of the lines fold in as shown. The diagonal lines fold to the other side, as do the two top flaps.
I used double sided tape on the long edge of the box. This will be tucked in to secure the box in place.
With the sides folded and secured, I pinch the diagonal lines at the bottom in.
Four short pieces of double sided tape will secure the diagonal folds in place.
The overlap also gets double sided tape.
I now have a neatly folded bottom and move on to the top.
Once again the diagonal lines are pinched in.
The top fold gets optional rounded ends.
I use Tombow glue to paste a small piece of Velcro to the top flaps.
The Velcro allows me to open and close the milk carton as often as I like.
