Paint A Sunrise In Oils

Sunrises tend to have brighter colours than the more muted sunsets. In today's blog, I show you how to paint a bright sunrise using mainly blue and orange. The painting was inspired by the Botswana vegetation of my surroundings.

This painting is done on a sheet of canvas torn from a Prime Art Canvas Pad.

The canvas sheet has already been primed to accept paint.

I start by covering the whole painting in Raw Linseed Oil.

I then paint both the sky, and its reflection in the water in Cadmium Orange, using horizontal sweeping motions with a flat brush. Be sure to create darker and lighter areas.

The rest of the sky and the remaining parts of the water is filled in with Phthalo Blue.

I use Filbert brush to paint some Light Green brushes on the bank of the water.

Viridian Green is added for a darker shade in the brushes.

Hooker's Green is then added for yet another shade in the brushes.

Before adding some trees, I grab the colours in the vicinity to darken the areas behind the trees.

The tree trunks and branches are painted by holding a round long-stemmed brush at the very end. I used Burnt Sienna to paint the trees in.

The trees are given some shadow areas by adding VanDyke Brown.

I then use a Filbert brush to add the first leaves to the trees.

A light shade of green is added for the leaves that reflect light.

I use Permanent Violet to add some birds in the distant sky.

This tranquil setting is completed in next to no time.
